Technically it’s still the same Volcano. However, the third crack opened at midnight between the two “Volcanoes” in Reykjanes, according to Einar Hjörleifsson, a nature conservation expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. The new fissure opened directly in front of the mbl.is webcam and you can see the new lava flow directly below.

Einar says that the rescue crews saw the land descend in the same area  yesterday, but this is 420 meters north of the source in Geldingadalur. The lava flows from the new fissure into the same valley Geldingadalur.

According to Einar, this seems to be a small opening, but based on what the rescue team saw yesterday, it is in an area of about 150 meters. It is considered likely that this is in place and webcam images support it. The new crack does not reach between the two craters at the moment.

The area is closed now but was supposed to open at six in the morning. It will be assessed in the morning whether it is possible, according to Einar.
